New Health Care Partnership Creates Excitement about Careers that Keep Minnesota Healthy

Learning about education, employment, and career opportunities in health care just got easier in Minnesota.  Minnesota's Internet System for Education and Employment Knowledge (ISEEK at www.iseek.org), in partnership with the health care industry, just released its new HealthCare Channel, a special Web site dedicated to helping people explore health careers and find training and employment opportunities in the industry.

Jeralyn Jargo, Project Manager for industry partnerships at the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities, explains, "the channel is a key element in our efforts to meet the needs of the health care industry for education, training, and career development."

The new channel is much needed in Minnesota as the state's population ages and the demand for health care workers keeps growing. In 2000, roughly half a million people or 12% of the state's population were aged 65 years or older. By 2025, this number is expected to increase to nearly 1.1 million or 20% of the population. It comes as no surprise, then, that Minnesota's health services industry outstrips all other industries in its demand for workers.

The ISEEK HealthCare Channel is designed to help meet this demand by helping people find rewarding careers in the health care field. Laurel Anderson, Director of Health Policy for the Minnesota Hospital and Healthcare Partnership, praises the great variety of career information available in the channel. "With health care being the largest private industry employer in Minnesota, I am pleased to see such a comprehensive site for health career information. Employers, career seekers and job applicants will benefit from the variety of information at this site."

Funded by industry partnerships at the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities, the health care channel is a site designed by and for health care professionals. The site is a collaboration among multiple health care organizations, including

  • Fairview Healthcare
  • Healthcare Education-Industry Partnership (HEIP)
  • HealthPartners
  • Minnesota Department of Health
  • Minnesota Hospital and Healthcare Partnership (MHHP).

The new channel is hosted and maintained by iSeek Solutions, the sponsor of ISEEK and itself a partnership of various public and private organizations, including

  • Governor's Workforce Development Council
  • Minnesota Department of Administration, Office of Technology
  • Minnesota Department of Children, Families and Learning
  • Minnesota Department of Economic Security
  • Minnesota Department of Trade and Economic Development
  • Minnesota Higher Education Services Office
  • Minnesota Private College Council
  • Minnesota State Colleges and Universities
  • University of Minnesota

For Laurel Anderson, a key contributor to the channel, the collaboration across public and private organizations is what makes the ISEEK HealthCare Channel unique in the state. " It is an indication of true partnership between the Minnesota State Colleges and University System, its iSeek Solutions partners, and the health care community."

Dr. Gary Langer, Director of iSeek Solutions, sees the potential of this unique collaboration in setting a precedent for public and private organizations working together to meet Minnesota's workforce development needs.

Says Langer, "we are very excited about this first opportunity to help a specific Minnesota industry meet its workforce development needs by providing streamlined electronic career and education services."   He is interested in working with other Minnesota industries and regions as well. "We hope that other channel partnerships with other Minnesota industries or regions will follow," he adds.

Leading the way, the health care industry now has a comprehensive tool to educate others and share the excitement about working a field that keeps Minnesota healthy.
